How 3D printing is helping to tackle Covid-19

Advances in 3D printing have been radically transforming manufacturing and revolutionising so many sectors. The benefits of 3D printing are huge, and now, as we fight a pandemic, everyone that does have access to a 3D printer maybe able to help in some way or make some kind of contribution.

There are many 3D-printing communities, like universities or other places of education, and manufacturing companies, that are working to help fight Covid-19. Their help is very important as we see a shortage of medical supplies all around the world.

Manufacturers and 3D printing companies all across the globe are switching from their usual line of business to produce equipment for the medical professionals that need them. Things like face masks or face shields, 3D printed nasal swabs, hand-free door openers and emergency replacement respirator valves.

Manchester Metrology Ltd has been helping with the fight against Covid-19 as well. We have been running the Markforged 2 3D printer around the clock to produce visors for the NHS and the Snapmaker 2 3D printer to print visors for local companies in need, which we have distributed free of charge.

Manchester Metrology Ltd is a leading supplier of metrology equipment including 3D scanners, 3D trackers and 3D printers. Manchester Metrology has 4 top of the range 3D printers available to hire or use as a service – these include Project 460 Plus, Figure 4, Fabpro 1000 and Markforged 2.

We have available the Snapmaker 3D printer. With its 3-in-1 software, it allows your creations to be just a few clicks away. The Snapmaker software updates regularly with new features to enable users to have the best possible experience when using it.

It operates at very high precision and with its ‘all metal build’ frame allowing very high quality prints. It is the perfect choice for rapid prototyping. See it in action here.

Manchester Metrology has been running the Markforged 2 3D printer around the clock, to produce visors for the NHS free of charge.

The Markforged 2 is a 3D printer for serious engineering and manufacturing applications. This is the first 3D printer in the world capable of printing composite materials with a heat deflection temperature of 140°C.

So, in addition to being able to reinforce nylon parts with continuous strands of carbon fibre, you can now reinforce parts with high-temperature materials like polycarbonate.

With Manchester Metrology, 3D scanning and printing has never been more accessible.
