Why did you choose an apprenticeship?
I chose an apprenticeship as I believe it is a great pathway to go down. Engineering in general is a rapidly growing industry with a lot of room for expansion, especially the metrology sector. This is due to the level of knowledge that can be gained from working within a company such as Manchester Metrology. Although it can be challenging at times it is enjoyable and engaging whilst remaining interesting.
What does your role involve/What does a typical day look like?
My role here at Manchester Metrology is to expand my knowledge on measurement devices, 3D printing and laser scanning. As we don’t manufacture any parts, my role here as an apprentice is to learn from other engineers how to operate the equipment to create accurate results. Day to day I use a wide range of equipment such as Portable CMM arms, laser trackers, 3D printers, 3D scanners and CMM machines. Every day is different. The constant changes in equipment being used depends on the job at hand, this allows me to take a step back and re-evaluate my knowledge when changing between jobs and equipment, therefore when coming back to a piece of equipment I can relate it to other properties and software’s to piece together a job.
Is there anything you have learnt that you wouldn’t have learnt otherwise?
Everything I have learnt at Manchester Metrology is unique. We operate with high value equipment that a lot of other companies don’t have in their possession, therefore I believe I have had the opportunity to work with various pieces of equipment at Manchester Metrology that I may not have come across elsewhere.
